As part of California’s Contra Costa County library system, Danville Library is on the smaller side of the public library scale, featuring an 18,000 sq. ft. single-story building, divided into two sections for children and adults. Located at 400 Front Street, it is conveniently close to the Danville Community Center, and also has a 576 sq. ft. “Mt. Diablo Room” for hosting large public and private events. There are 33 computers with free Internet access that are open to the public, as well as free Wi-Fi throughout the library. There are also online resources for students, offering help with homework, writing, and research.
Friends of the Danville Library Book Sales
Thanks to the Friends of the Danville Library group, a nonprofit volunteer organization that has been around for more than 50 years, the Danville Library has been able to raise funds to provide valued resources and programs for members of the Danville community. Part of this fundraising comes from a small bookstore located within the Danville Library. The store carries DVDs, CDs, and audio books alongside the typical fiction, nonfiction and children’s literature items. The book store is open from 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. on Mondays, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturday.
Another popular service that the Friends of the Danville Library provides is the quarterly used book sale that they host, featuring thousands of used books at discount prices. For book lovers watching their dime or parents looking to build their children’s personal collections, these large book sales are the perfect place to find what they need. Because the books that are featured in these sales are collected through donations from the community, the Friends of the Danville Library can sell them at more than reasonable prices. The sales are held in the Mt. Diablo Room, and dates can be found on their website under their event calendar.
Programs and Events
The Danville Library offers a wide range of programs that vary in topics, from computer literacy to guest author appearances. They are also host to exciting events like Bingo Schmingo, which allow visitors to have fun or else learn something interesting and new. Recurring popular events that cater to children include Toddler Time, Legos and Listening, and Mother Goose Time. They combine reading with fun, using audiobooks to inspire creative lego-building, finger-play-acting, and even trained dogs in the Paws to Read Literacy Program. For adults, there are CityReads events, in which a particular book is promoted through various libraries throughout the County as a way of getting the community talking about, and sharing, the special meanings that can be found in literature. The calendar of events can be found here.
The Danville Library is open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Friday to Saturday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Sunday from 1 – 5 p.m. In order to obtain a physical library card, one must go in person to any one of the Contra Costa County libraries. You will need a valid California state ID or driver's license. Or, you can apply for an immediate online account, giving you access to online services.
